Sun and Moon Tattoos | Tons of Ideas & Designs

As with all tattoos, sun and moon tattoos can be used for the beauty of body art.  But many people are tattooed with this design because of the numerous meanings it holds.  Sun and moon tattoos are known to represent a merging of opposites, unity, and cooperation instead of conflict, and rebirth.  For a large population just seeing the sun and the moon is a thrilling sight and having them both together as body art is a pleasure.

Sun and moon tattoos as body art are popular today.  Just look around you.  They are seen in a plethora of styles; ranging from realistic, fantasy, overstated, cartoonish, in action, in a design that resembles Yin Yang and separate from each other yet close together. Sun and moon tattoos are really sweet in cartoon style.  The moon can be inked in a half smiling face blowing air and sun smiling away at the warmth he is creating.  In a fantasy style, you can pretty much do whatever you want but here is a suggestion.  Use uncommonly seen colors for the sun and moon.  Perhaps a blue half moon with a green half sun including some rays emanating so people can recognize the symbol.

Meaning of Sun and Moon Tattoos

For people who want meaning in their sun and moon tattoos, you’ll find plenty available with these designs.  Sun and moon tattoos are generally about the size of a flattened orange and in that circular shape.  The circular shape alone is a symbol of the never ending circle of life.  Placing a half moon and half sun inside the circle supplies even more meaning.  The sun is often recognized as a symbol of rebirth, strength and power. The moon is associated with the female in many cultures often in the form of a goddess. These Sun and moon tattoos would really present well in color.  Your color choices, of course, will depend on the style you choose. Suggestion though, would be to have the moon in light blue and the sun in a lighter red or dark orange.  You can see how the masculine and feminine in this tattoo complement each other. It’s almost a modern western version of the Yin Yang.

Speaking of Yin Yang, many sun and moon tattoos are seen in the Yin Yang style; it just begs for it.  Many people believe that Yin Yang represents the female and male aspects of the human, but it really represent that one side is mostly masculine with some feminine qualities and that the female side is mostly feminine with some masculine qualities. This relates nicely to the sun and moon tattoos because they hold the same qualities and meanings.  For instance the moon does not strictly represent female goddesses. The blue moon for instance can symbolize contrariness in a male.   So if these types of sun and moon tattoos appeal to you and you want meaning, color will be very important. Research here and decide what colors are important to you and the meaning you desire.  It is completely appropriate to design the moon and sun in the tear drop style of Yin Yang tattoos. Just use different colors and designs so that the different halves are apparent as sun and moon tattoos.

Looking for a small simple orange sun with a thin black cloud around it just like our dad had done in the late 70’s. Probably in Hawaii. Thanks!

Yesterday, my boyfriend and I went in and got matching tattoos. We both got the dopamine molecular structure and I got the sun symbol on my right hand middle finger and the moon symbol on my left hand middle finger. I always wanted them and I’m so happy I finally did it! They’re very simple 🙂
